Jewelry clasps have always been a functional component to necklace, bracelet, and anklet closures but now they're starting to become a big part of the style.
The four main types of jewelry closures are lobster clasps, spring ring clasps, toggle clasps, and magnet clasps. Of course, there are a lot more that exist in the world, but for now we'll go over the basics and which clasp might be right for you.
Lobster Clasp
Also known as the lobster claw clasp, this is the mosts commonly available clasp, and rightfully so. It has an elongated body with a large opening and its ergonomic lever is easy for your fingers to grasp on to the closure. They land in the sweet spot between easy to use and secure, so if you're looking for something convenient to put on and you know you'll be running around all day, I'd recommend that you go for the lobster clasp.
Spring Ring Clasp
They operate pretty similarly to lobster clasps, except they have a circle body with a smaller opening and a tiny little lever that you can pull back to release the bracelet, anklet, or necklace. Some say that spring ring clasps are a little more visually appealing than the lobster clasp. Since they're both lock clasps and function very similarly, it's more of a matter of preference. The spring ring does take a little longer to put on, but it is just as secure as the lobster clasp and perfect for running around all day. So if you want the same functionality as a lobster clasp, but like a rounded closure a little better, go for the spring ring clasp.
Magnet Clasp
Now we're starting to walk in the easy set up zone. Some people just have a need for speed, and magnet clasps are hands down the easiest way to put on a necklace, bracelet, or anklet. The closure is made of strong magnets that click together when they're close. No fiddling with the lever or searching for the spring ring. No ergonomic challenges whatsoever. They're not as secure as the lock clasps (lobster and spring ring clasps) but if you're looking for something to clip on and go, a magnet clasp is for you.
Toggle Clasp
This is where we get into the style zone. Toggle clasps are two-piece closures that lock in manually with the "T" going into the "O." Stylewise it's the most versatile of the bunch, with designs ranging from the simple T and O, to the O coming in shapes like hearts, flowers, and other fun designs to keep the necklace, bracelet, or anklet fresh. Something new we've been seeing in 2020 is the toggle clasp acting as the pendant. That's right, the clasp is flipped around and used as the centerpiece. Although toggle clasps are not as secure as the rest of the clasps, they're super easy to put on. If you're looking for that extra convenience and style and know you won't be moving around too much all day, then the toggle clasp is for you.
